Iditarod Air Force pilot Frank Pinkerton takes off from the ski strip at Merrill Field in his Cessna 172 with a load of straw. Idtarod pilots fly over 800 bales of straw, enough for each dog team at each checkpoint. They also fly over 650 dropped and scratched dogs back to Anchorage or one of the hubs. More than 75,000 pounds of dog food to checkpoints.
