Donald Smidt has no illusions about the challenges facing him in the 1,100-mile Yukon Quest sled dog race.

The 39-year old Van Dyne man finished the 1,150-mile Iditarod on his first try in March. That race cost him more than $20,000. He had to deal with inadequate snow, icy dirt trails and reduced supplies after his food froze.

But Smidt said he’s looking forward to the Yukon Quest, which should be more suited to his Siberian huskies. He also wants to be able to say he’s finished the world’s two longest sled dog races.

The Yukon Quest starts Feb. 9 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.

The 29 mushers include 2007 Iditarod and Yukon Quest defending champion Lance Mackey.
