Sled dog world championships to be staged next month in Quebec

More than 400 teams and 2,500 dogs from as far away as Finland and Sweden are expected at the 2009 International Federation of Sleddog Sports world championships.

The nine-day competition will take place along the Daaquam river at the village of  St-Just-de-Bretenieres, southeast of Quebec City near the Maine border.

A total of 18 events in sprint, mid-distance, Nordic pulka and skijoring categories will be staged from Jan. 16 to 25. Trails used for the competitions pass through Appalachian Regional Park.

Participants are also coming from countries including Norway, the Czech Republic and the United States, according to the event website.

Organizers are offering a variety of related activities.

Visitors can get educated on the history of sled dog sport.
