Amber Moore: "He was my baby."

Lansing resident Amber Moore was shocked to learn that her 3-year-old Siberian Husky named Sam was accidentally put to sleep last Tuesday. Sam, along with Moore's Golden Retriever Cici, were picked up by the Ingham County Animal Control after they were seen running loose.

Amber Moore: "There's a couple of kids that live around the neighborhood that let them off the front porch."

The shelter has a policy which only allows them to hold all captured animals for a maximum of 12 days.

Deputy Steven J. Hummel: "She had left her dog here for a total of 12 days. The state law requires that we hold it a minimum of 7 days."

Moore says she followed the animal shelter's policy, but when she went to pick up her dogs on the 12th day, it was too late.

Amber Moore: "The lady at the front desk, when I was giving her the money for the other dog, she said I feel like it was partially my fault because I didn't write it down that I talked to you 2 hours ago."

But Deputy Hummel says, with an animal shelter that is 95% full, there just wasn't enough room to hold Moore's dogs any longer.

Deputy Steven J. Hummel: "We really don't have the luxury of holding dogs that aren't adoptable and have stayed their legal holding time, and so we have some hard choices we have to make, unfortunately."

Moore says she wasn't given notice that her dogs were going to be put to sleep, and has hired an attorney to look into the case. However, she says that suing the shelter won't make up for the pain they've caused her family.

Amber Moore: "It's a big loss. They are not going to be able to replace the dog that I lost, but they can get me another dog."
