Melanie Shirilla of Lincoln, Mont., gained the overall lead in the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race on Wednesday, making up a gap of almost 20 minutes in the overall standings with a solid performance.
Shirilla covered the 58-mile loop course near Alpine in 4 hours, 42 minutes and 58 seconds. Her overall time of 19:04:56 is almost eight minutes better than Lander’s Wendy Davis, who is second at 19:12:32. Davis entered Wednesday’s stage with the overall lead.
Jacques Philip of Nenana, Alaska, was second in Wednesday’s stage and is third overall, just less than 24 minutes behind Davis.
The IPSSSDR continues with the sixth stage today in Kemmerer. The seventh stage is Friday in the Bridger Valley, while the eighth and final stage is set for Saturday in Park City, Utah.
