Sent to Siberia, for fun

John Pannell, 47, from Mutchetts Close in Garston has just returned from a 12-day winter trip on the Trans-Siberian railway.

He travelled from Moscow to Beijing on the train with highlights being husky dog sledging in the Ural Mountains, passing by the frozen Lake Bakal in Siberia and visiting the Harbin ice sculpture festival in north China.

John has travelled on all three routes of the Trans-Siberia railway and in both directions.

He says he is not a “train spotter”, but finds the train the best way to get immersed and experience the people, food and culture of Russia, Mongolia and China.

At its longest, the railway is 5,772 miles long, spans eight time zones and takes several days complete the journey non-stop.

Leaves, snow and rain don’t affect the safety or punctuality like his 20 minute commute to London each day.

As a keen travel photographer the journey provided new photos for his website www.transsiberia.com.

His return flight was on Sunday’s BA38 from Beijing.

It was not until he checked in that he heard about the previous week’s crash landing on the same flight.

Statistics did not worry him, although he did have his camera on hand during the landing.
