Ever been to Trail Center during the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon? If not, consider heading up there next year. It’s a hoot, to say the least.
More than 100 people crowded around the checkpoint on Poplar Lake behind Trail Center on Monday night, cheering on their favorites and talking to friends by the crackling fire as they waited for one more musher with his team to cross the line and head up to the parking lot for food and rest.
It was exciting, yes, but it was also subdued — relatively quiet in the restaurant and certainly hushed around the sleeping mushers and their dogs. Veteran Beargrease fans said it’s always this way. Sled dogs can be darn noisy, but not when they’re working, they said.
It was a great race this year, too, with more participants in the marathon and a good group of enthusiastic fans, said Jason Rice, who wrote the official journal for the race this year.
