New sled dog race will run from Unalakleet to Nome

You can add another sled dog race that will go along Alaska’s western coast.

KNOM reports (http://bit.ly/n9vAXQ) the first Paul Johnson Memorial Norton Sound 450 will be start Feb. 8 in Unalakleet, and finish about three days later in Nome.

The route will take mushers through many of the western Alaska communities that also will be checkpoints for the bigger Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race a month later, like Shaktoolik, Koyuk, Elim, Golovin and White Mountain.

The purse is $50,000.

The race is in memory of Paul Johnson, an Iditarod veteran who died in October of cancer.
