EDMONTON – An Edmonton man was convicted of cruelty to animals today for beating an 11-year-old Alaskan malamute with a two-by-four.
Provincial court Judge Brad Kerby found 45-year-old Michael Lowery guilty of injuring an animal and cruelty to animals in connection with the summer beating of the dog, named Konan. Lowery was found not guilty of beating a second dog, Sharky, and the Crown dropped two mischief charges.
On June 15, police were dispatched to a home near 98th Street and 89th Avenue after a neighbour reported seeing a man beating two dogs with a stick.
At the scene, they found a two-by-four covered in blood and a pool of blood near one of the dogs, defence lawyer Geoff Green said after court.
Konan required life-saving surgery, but survived.
Green said today his client had suffered a dog bite and was defending himself from the animals.
Kerby ordered a pre-sentence report and psychological assesment to be conducted on Lowery. He is expected to make his next appearance for sentencing on Jan. 23.
