Between 80 and 100 dog sled teams are expected to race Saturday and Sunday in the 19th annual Mackinaw Mush in Mackinaw City.
Racing will begin at 9:30 a.m. both days.
The teams will start and finish their sprints in the same location, creating plenty of action for spectators. This year there will be dual starts, meaning two teams will leave the starting chute at the same time.
Spectators can watch the start and finish of the races next to the IGA Supermarket on West Central Avenue, or they can catch a glimpse of teams in mid-race from a location on Trails End Road.
In addition to the regular racing on Saturday, a “kiddie†mush is slated from noon to 1 p.m. The “kiddie†mush allows children between the ages of 3 and 12 to drive a dog sled and learn more about the sport. Donations will be accepted.
Awards will be presented to the weekend’s winning mushers on Sunday, Feb. 3 at the race site immediately following the races.
No pets are allowed at the race site because they distract the teams.
Many volunteer opportunities exist for individuals interested in getting involved. No experience is necessary, and help is needed with registering teams when they arrive, handling dogs and helping teams get to and from the starting chute, grooming trails and more.
