Defending Iditarod and Yukon Quest champion Lance Mackey just keeps right on winning. In a tune-up for his repeat, the Fairbanks musher bested a field of 24 in the Tustumena 200 on the Kenai Peninsula.
Homer’s Bill Steyer finished in second place followed by Judy Currier of Two Rivers.
Nine mushers had finished as of Sunday night with eight still on the trail. Seven racers scratched from the race, including legally-blind Iditarod finisher Rachel Scdoris.

Yazwinski is a first-time winner with Don Bowers 300 victory.
Molly Yazwinski of Fairbanks took home her first-ever victory by besting a field of 12 in the Don Bowers Memorial 300. Yazwinski, a handler for Susan Butcher’s husband, Dave Monson, was the only finisher reported as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The Massachusetts native, who is entered to race in this year’s Iditarod, reached the finish near Talkeetna at 4:12 p.m.
Four mushers remain on the trail led by Willow’s Rick Holt, who also plans to race the Iditarod. Eight mushers scratched.
