Bill Kornmuller drove a team of 18 dogs to the open-class victory Sunday in a chilly Chugiak Dog Mushers Association points race at the Beach Lake Trails in Chugiak.
Temperatures hovered between minus 5 and minus 10 at the start of the race, but Kornmuller’s team — the biggest in the race — was hot enough to cover 12 miles in 37 minutes, 25 seconds. That gave Kornmuller a 38-second margin over runner-up Ed Wood.
Jennifer Probert won the six-mile, six-dog class by almost a minute in 22:50, and just missed claiming another win in the four-dog, four-mile race. Kris Rasey won that race in 17:56, just two seconds ahead of Probert.
