The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon made its 25th return to Duluth, this year with plenty of snow on the ground. After a long two-year wait, both mushers and spectators were happy to be back for the event.

With all of the yipping and howling, you could definitely see and hear the excitement in the air. For Ward Wallin of Two Harbors, it’s been five years since he’s braved the 379.2 mile course. “When you get to the start of the race, you’d better be ready,” said Wallin. “And I think we are.”

It seemed the dogs were ready, too. And for the nearly 800 four-legged racers who arrived at Ordean Field for the race start, there were the handlers, veterinarians and handlers making sure every one of them would cross the finish line safely. “We look and make sure there are no pad issues, no splits, no cuts and no broken toenails,” said Dr. Nick Vukich of Green Bay. “We listen for heart murmers, and look at their lunds to make sure they’re good to go.”

The handlers also play an important part, doling out food and taking care of the dogs when the mushers need some shuteye at each checkpoint. Leah Blenkinsop came with Hank DeBruin, all the way from Haliburton, Ontario, Canada. “We’ll take care of the dogs, feeding them, and making sure they get good rest,” said Blenkinsop. “It’s just keeping them hydrated that’s very important.”

And when the last dogs left the chute, it was apparent that the Beargrease had made a triumphant return to town, and everyone was happy about it. “I just love how everyone comes together, and the sense of community,” said Andrew Webster, holding his daughter Ahna. “It’s great to experience the comraderie of the sport.”
