MUSHING: Ryan Redington claims 38-minute win over Anderson; Kaduce is 3rd.

Dog mushing’s first family brought home another victory Sunday, this time in the race named after its patriarch.

Ryan Redington, grandson of the Iditarod founder, won the Knik 200-Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race on Sunday morning, beating Ken Anderson and Dan Kaduce to the finish by about 38 minutes.

Ryan Redington, who lives in Wasilla , crossed the finish line just after 9 a.m. He was the first into Skwentna Saturday evening, checking in at 6:11. Ryan’s brother, Ray Redington Jr., claimed fourth at 9:55 a.m.

Two Rivers’ Anderson, seventh in 2007, finished 20 seconds ahead of Kaduce at 9:38 a.m. despite being the 10th musher into Skwentna. He made up 34 minutes on Kaduce during the trek back to Knik.

Matt Hayashida rounded out the top five, coming in at 9:59.

The 32 mushers who left Knik on Saturday morning faced rough trail conditions at the start, but Ryan Redington plowed ahead to post a 34-minute advantage over Kaduce at Skwentna.

Sterling’s Mitch Seavey, the 2004 Iditarod champion and a prerace favorite coming off last year’s ninth-place showing, was almost four hours behind Redington into Skwentna, but shaved almost two hours off the deficit to post a 10th-place finish.

Zack Steer of Sheep Mountain, third last year and another prerace favorite, was third into Skwentna on Saturday night but faded to sixth on the return trip to Knik.

Mike Santos, fifth Saturday night, dropped back to 14th Sunday morning.

Gene Smith, a 64-year-old ex-rodeoer who has broken bones in his neck twice and is a cancer survivor, finished 12th, a little over two hours behind the winner Redington.

Jon Little, whose wrong turn in last year’s Knik 200 allowed Jeff King to come from behind and win, finished 13th. King did not return to defend his title this year.

As of Sunday evening, only 14 of the 32 who started the race had finished.
