Four wolf hybrid dogs in jeopardy of losing their lives have been saved this Thanksgiving holiday, thanks to one good Samaritan.
Although that person wishes to remain unidentified, Sheri Ray, former owner of the four dogs that are part husky, malamute and wolf, is very grateful they will live.
“For Thanksgiving, I’m thankful that at least my dogs are saved,” Ray said.
It is a relatively happy ending to horrific story that unfolded earlier this month.
Early the morning of Nov. 3 some of Ray’s outside dogs, which she said were strays she had taken in to care for, escaped from their outdoor pen and cornered some sheep in a neighbor’s yard.
Nothing happened in that incident, but at least two of the dogs returned Nov. 6 to the neighbor’s yard, attacking and killing one sheep.
The neighbor shot one of the dogs during the attack.
After they returned again Nov. 7, two other dogs of the same breeds that were possibly involved in the incidents were euthanized at Ray’s request by the Solano County Animal Care Services in Fairfield.
Hoping to find a loving home, Ray signed over control of the one remaining outside dog and her three inside dogs, none of which were involved in the attack she said.
“I didn’t get them back, but we did save their lives,” said Ray fighting back tears over the phone. “Those were my babies. It’s a heartbreaking situation.”
Ronald Whitfield, manager of Solano County Animal Care Services, said the four wolf hybrids will be taken Saturday to Howling Acres Wolf Sanctuary in Williams, Ore.
Since the dogs will be safely removed to a rescue center, there will not be a dangerous-dog hearing as is the process for dogs involved in an attack.
Ray said she has been rescuing dogs for more than 10 years and hasn’t had a problem before.
“I try to find the dogs homes before they even make it through my door,” said Ray, adding that she is looking into moving out of the area. “I’m sad. They were just like big teddy bears. They would sleep on my pillow.”
Ray also would like to avoid any civil lawsuit, but would still like to do her best to pay back her neighbor for their sheep.
