Hans Gatt was leading the chilly Cantwell Classic 200-mile mushing race on Saturday.
Gatt, of Atlin, British Columbia, is a three-time Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race champion who says he is done competing in that race but is signed up for the 2008 Iditarod. He was the first of 32 mushers to leave the Big Su Checkpoint, taking off at 1:14 p.m. Saturday.
He was followed one minute later by Debbie Moderow. Jessie Royer of Fairbanks left at 1:22, followed by Michelle Phillips at 1:28 and Judy Currier of Two Rivers at 1:29.
Others to leave within about two hours of Gatt were Jennifer Kemper, 1:39; Hugh Neff, 1:40; Clint Warnke, 1:40; Rohn Buser, 1:43; Martin Buser, 1:44; John Stewert, 1:49; Mike Barnett, 1:50; Anne Capistrant, 1:55; Aaron Burmeister, 1:55; Scott Reid, 1:58; Bill Cotter, 2:08; and Ramy Brooks, 2:11.
Temperatures for the second running of the race, which travels along parts of the Denali Highway from Cantwell to MacLaren Lodge and back, were reportedly around 40-below zero on Saturday night with a slight breeze.
