Interested in digging into your pup’s past? Not sure if you have a full blooded schnauzer or a mix? A new product makes it possible for you to find out.
The Canine Heritage Breed test is a DNA test that allows you to find out the genetic makeup of your canine. It is the first DNA-diagnostic for dogs. At $65, the kit identifies more than 100 breeds.

Robin Kendell works at Outdoors, Inc, and knows her playful pup Parker is at least part boxer.
“Obviously coloring wise he’s mixed with something else other than boxer,” Kendell said.
“There’s something honorable about saying your dog is of a certain lineage,” adds Chris Owen. He has a self-proclaimed mutt named Minerva he has raised from birth. He has no clue what’s in his genetics mix, but he’d like to.
Performing the test is easy. Just swab the inside of the cheek and send your results off to the lab address provided with the packet. A few weeks later the results are in.
It turns out Parker is mostly boxer. But he also has some Miniature Schnauzer.
“Miniature Schnauzer, who would have thought it?” Kendall asked.
Minverva is more of a mix- part Siberian Husky, part Collie, Shetland Sheepdog and Chow.
Be aware, the test doesn’t identify all breeds, so the results can come back partially inconclusive. Of course, most dog owners will love their mutt no matter what.
But, knowing your pet’s history can also determine if it’s prone to medical or temperament problems.
And, just understanding your pet’s personality traits can help you raise a happier, healthier dog.
