Dog sled racing heats up in the dead of winter and training lasts all year but intensifies in the fall to help the dogs perform at their best.
“The sport of mushing does involve snow, but there is fall training involved. The dogs need training. It helps for working up to the miles needed for a big race,” said JoLynn Stresing, a dog sled racer.
Although it’s easy to get started, there are a few things you and your dog would need to compete.
“These are world class athletes and they require a lot of supplies. We spend over $6,000 a year in dog food, training, equipment,” said Stresing.
Year round, Stresing uses a four-wheeler when training her various teams. Her all-white team is the fastest, but all her 40 dogs are special and a big part of her everyday life.
“Having these dogs is a life style. I take them out in the morning for exercise and then a meal. In the afternoon, there is more work and a snack. I love it. It’s a way for me to enjoy the animals and being outdoors,” Stresing said.
Whether you’re a dog lover or sports fan, check out a dog sled race and cheer for your new favorite racer. Like any athlete, they love the roar or howl of the crowd.
