A musher from Quebec has taken his fourth title in the Can-Crown International Sled Dog Races in northern Maine.

Martin Massicotte, of St. Tite, Quebec, crossed the finish line in Fort Kent at 1:30 p.m. Monday, followed six minutes later by Andre Longchamps of Pont Rouge, Quebec. Matt Carstens of Whitefield, N.H., came in third.

The dog sled race across the wilderness of northern Maine kicked off Saturday with thousands of spectators at the start line. Fort Kent Police Chief Kenneth Michaud says it was the largest crowd he had seen in the 16 years of the race.

All told, 81 teams were competing for $40,000 in cash prizes in the 250-miler and two shorter races held over the weekend.

In the 30-miler, three women from Quebec took the top three spots with Genevieve Telmosse of Vals des Lacs winning the race in two hours, 33 minutes and three seconds.

In the 60-miler, Claude Baril of St. Zenon, Quebec, won in a time of five hours, 56 minutes and 44 seconds.
