The stage has been set for a classic Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby, which is slated for February 8-10 here in the Lake City.

Moultonborough’s Keith Bryar edged Quebec’s Jean Boissoneault in the annual Pine Tree Power Classic, held this past weekend on the scenic expanse of the frozen Chocorua Lake and the surrounding trails. The annual event, which features a number of sprint races along with the Pine Tree Power Classic Open Class, is hosted by the New England Sled Dog Club and the Tamworth Outing Club.

According to Stan Coville, of the Tamworth Outing Club, a record 70 teams competed over the two-day event.

“We had a beautiful day on Saturday and a little snow on Sunday, but the conditions were very good,” Coville said.

Bryar took first overall in the Open Class, covering the 22 mile course (11 each day) in 70 minutes and 29 seconds. The local favorite just edged out Boissoneault, who crossed the finish line just nine seconds off the winning pace at 70:38. Doug Butler took third, while Laconia’s Jim Lyman was third.

Both are expected to compete in Laconia at the World Championships.

The 6-dog Pro Class was won by Gilford’s Brittany Colbath, one of Bryar’s nieces competing this weekend. Colbath finished with a two-day total of 45:19 to beat Maxim Boissoneault (48:24). Rainer Wischinski won the 8-dog Pro class with a time of 55:52, while Brittany Colbath/Sharon Welsh took second (1:00:17). Rachel Colbath took first overall in the 4-dog Pro Class (25:55) with Shawn Weirich taking second (27:02).

Other winners on the day were Kim Berg (6-dog Sportsman); Jacey Connell (4-dog Sportsman); Hailey Magliozzi (1-dog Junior Day 1); Noah Brown (1-dog Junior Day 2); and Fran Plaisted (Skijoring).
