This was an excellant book. There is a real love between the musher and his dogs. The book had warmth, excitement and peril. It is amazing the number of people involved in this race. There is more than one story in this book. I want to read it again.

I am actually living for the summer in one of the towns (Elim) that is along the Iditarod race trail. In this book, Tim Jones chronicles the 1979 race which he followed by small prop plane. His book gives an excellent combination of suspenseful race details, villiage histories, and quirky biographies of the people associated with this great race. Fascinating reading for anyone on the “outside,” as Alaskans call the people of the lower 48. Expose yourself to a different world and read this never dull book. I found myself racing to the finish just like the participants – on little sleep, exhausted, but exhilarated.
