A unique event for the Southeast and a fun educational outing for families and dog lovers, the Alaska Serum Run Re-enactment takes place on the Virginia Creeper Trail from Abingdon trail head to Damascus in southwestern Virginia. Hosted by the Siberian Husky Rescue, the day begins with Breakfast with the Sled Dogs at the farmers market in Abingdon. A storyteller tells the tale of the historic 1925 Alaska event, the serum is handed to the first musher and the four part relay takes place along the trail.
The final relay ends with a parade of dogsled teams to Damascus, where the serum is delivered to the Mayor. Other events of the day include champion border collie herding demonstrations, a dachshund race, an Alaska lumberjack competition hosted by the Virginia Tech Forestry Club, a Meet the Mushers dinner, entertainment and more. This event, which is part of Winterfest on the Virginia Creeper Trail, takes place on January 17, 2009 and benefits the Siberian Husky Rescue.
