About 20 dogs have been dropped so far in this year’s Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, but there are no serious casualties.

That’s according to race spokesman Chas St. George.

He says the number of dropped dogs is tapering off.

St. George says usually in the first third of the race, mushers expect to drop a lot of dogs. This is an area for a lot of opportunities for sprains or other injuries.

The race leaders are into Nikolai, 347 miles into the 1,100-mile race.

There’s also been one musher that has scratched.

Tom Roig of Shreve, Ohio, is out of the race, citing concern for his health and the health of his team.

A record field of 94 mushers remains in the running.
