The current route of the race has been in place for the last three years. According to former U.P. 200 race manager and musher Mike Hutchens, the winning strategy has been to run 60 miles from Marquette to Wetmore and rest five hours; run 60 miles to Grand Marais, rest six hours; return to Wetmore and take five more hours of rest before running the last leg to Marquette.
